Boston History



The City of Boston was founded in 1630 by the Puritans. During the 18th century the area was prime location for several historical events including the American Revolution, the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of Bunker Hill. For years, Boston has been a primary shipping port and manufacturing center that has attracted millions of visitors to the New England area each year.

Boston was the first city to open a public school in 1635. The Boston Latin School which still stands today as the most prominent elementary school in the country was Americas first public school. Additionally, Boston was the first city to begin the subway system in the United States.

The city has grown geographically as a result of reclaimed land and landfills along the harbor. The Back Bay area and South End neighborhood are both built on reclaimed land that was once under water. Areas such as the Financial District and the South Boston waterfront are well known for their very prominent landmarks including the Boston Public Library and the two tallest buildings in the New England area which include the John Hancock Tower and the Prudential Center.

The 21 neighborhoods that are recognized by the City of Boston as their own unique areas with boundaries include Allston/Brighton, Back Bay, Bay Village, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown/Leather District, Dorchester, Downtown Boston/Financial District, East Boston, Fenway/Kenmore, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Mission Hill, North End, Roslindale, Roxbury, South Boston, South End, West End and West Roxbury.
