HistorySouth Boston is a neighborhood in Boston that was once known as Dorchester Neck. This area of Boston was once a narrow strip of land that was connected to the mainland of the colonial settlement of Dorchester and Dorchester Heights. South Boston was annexed by Boston from 1804-1870. In South Boston during the American Revolutionary War, George Washington forced the evacuation of the British troops from Boston on March 17, 1776. In the early 1970s, South Boston gained national attention for opposition that the neighborhood had against court mandated school desegregation when the area bussed students to different neighborhoods. DescriptionSouth Boston was targeted for a large redevelopment plan that is set to begin in 2011 and will cost more than $3 billion. The plan is to replace the parking lots that are located between the federal courthouse and the convention center with a mixed use development that will span more than 6 million square feet. South Boston offers various options for transportation to residents and visitors. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Red Line rapid transit stations are located in the South Boston area. Red Line stations Broadway, Andrew and JFK/U Mass are all located in South Boston. Additionally, the MBTA bus services, the MBTA Silver Line and five bus routes are all located throughout the South Boston area for ease of travel throughout the city. ResidentsResidents of South Boston are primarily Polish and Lithuanian. The area is well known for being primarily a working class Irish American neighborhood like many of the small neighborhoods in Boston. South Boston is home to many young professionals and families. The majority of South Boston residents are attracted to the area for the strong sense of community and easy access to the Downtown Boston area as well as the many options for public transportation. Rental HousingSouth Boston realty has seen increasing property values over the recent years and today some of the housing in the area is priced the highest in the entire city.
