Roxbury

History

Roxbury is a neighborhood in Boston that was one of the first areas to be founded by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the early 1600s. This area became a city in 1846 but was annexed to Boston in 1868. Roxbury originally encompassed the current neighborhoods of Jamaica Plain, Roslindale and West Roxbury as well as South End and Back Bay. Today, Roxbury is is one of 21 official neighborhoods in Boston and serves as the heart of the Black culture in Boston.

Description

Roxbury is bounded by the Christian Science Center and the Prudential Center as well as everything south and east of the Muddy River. On one side of the Muddy River is Roxbury and on the other side is the neighborhood of Brookline Boston. Although Roxbury was encompassed the neighborhoods of Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury, the area has since been divided by the Peter Parley Road and Walnut Avenue as well as Columbia Road.

Residents

Roxbury is a predominantly African American neighborhood and is considered the heart of Black culture in Boston. The area has been mostly African American based since 1960 but there is also a growing number of Puerto Rican residents who have entered the Roxbury area and now call this neighborhood home.

Rental Housing

Rental housing in Roxbury is primarily of the single family home type with small apartment buildings and multi family complexes also in the area. Rentals in the area are typically low cost and well under $1,000. Most Roxbury rentals average around $463 per month compared to more than $1,000 per month for Boston rentals. Roxbury is an affordable area but high crime rates make this area less appealing to some.

Fun Stuff

Roxbury is home to the Roxbury Community College and the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's Center for Urban Ministerial Education. The Eastern Nazarene College offers adult studies and LEAD classes in the neighborhood of Roxbury.

The Boston Public Library branch known as the Dudley Branch Library is also in Roxbury. This branch of the library opened in April 1978 and replaced two other libraries (the Mount Pleasant Branch and the Fellowes Athenaeum).
