Readville is considered by many to be a part of the Hyde Park neighborhood but some residents do like to call the Readville area a place of it's own. Readville is bordered by the are of Milton to the south, Dedham to the west and Hyde Park to the north and east. From the Milton area, the primary entrance into Readville is by way of Paul's Bridge which is one of the oldest bridges of the Commonwealth. Home to Camp Meigs during the American Civil War, Readville was used as a training camp for Union soldiers. An area in Readville called the Meigs Field commemorates these accomplishments with several plaques and small monuments. Field Day is held each 4th of July in Readville at Meigs Field. The area of Readville is primarily Irish and Italian and features many different churches and places of worship. The Blue Hill Community Church has had worship services since as early as 1888 in this area. The famous Reverend Dr. Phillips Brooks, author of the Christmas Carol preached his last sermon at the Blue Hill Community Church. During the early 1900s a racing facility known as the Readville Trotting Park was located in Readville but this property would later become a large grocery store distribution warehouse and distribution center for Stop & Shop. This area is now used as a multi use warehouse property. During the 1960s, Readville was also home to the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Locomotive and Car Shops. Readville offers views of the Great Blue Hill area and the Blue Hills Reservation. Wetlands along the area known as Fowl Meadow are also visible from the Readville area as is the Neponset River. The area of Readville is primarily a residential area but there continue to be commercial and light industrial plants in the Readville area as well. |
