North End



 

History



North End was the center of Jewish life in Boston in the early 19th century and was also a place where the Irish migrated in huge numbers to dominate the neighborhood for many years. Home to some of the most wealthy residents of Boston, North End was also the first community of African American people that was created by those who had been freed and were once slaves.

North End was well known as the center for Italian living in Boston during the 20th century and is also the landmark where the famous Boston Molasses Disaster took place in 1919. North End is the famed area where Paul Revere and Old North Church had lanterns hung to signal if the Redcoats' route wat by land or by sea hence the famous term - “One if by land, two if by sea.”

Description



North End was long cut off from the rest of Boston by the Central Artery, an elevated highway that cut through the heart of Boston. A recent and very costly project known as the “Big Dig” dropped the Central Artery highway into a tunnel and gardens have replaced the area which was once a highway.

North End is a mostly residential neighborhood that is home to Italian immigrants. Located in the northeast corner of the Boston peninsula, North End is almost completely surrounded by water and is filled with winding streets that are mostly narrow and cozy.
