Neponset is a neighborhood in Boston that is actually a sub neighborhood located in Dorchester. Dorchester is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Boston and thus Neponset is a very common area for people to live and to work in the city. Neponset and Dorchester were separated and incorporated from Boston in 1630 and then annexed in 1870. The area is largely working class and consists of many African Americans and European Americans as well as Caribbean Americans and Latinos.
The Neponset area is gains it's name from the very close by Neponset river that runs through Dorchester at Lower Mills. Neponset is not a commercially driven area in the Dorchester Boston area. This neighborhood is primarily residential in nature with a diverse mix of Irish, Vietnamese and European as well as Asian immigrants living in the area. In Neponset the majority of residents still tend to be Irish Americans. The Irish make up a very large part of the diverse mix of people throughout the Neponset area and around Dorchester. Located along the lower bank of Dorchester and divided from Quincy Massachusetts from the Neponset River, the area of Neponset offers a range of housing types for families and for individuals. Many of the rentals in Neponset are small single family homes but there is also a mix of multi-family apartment buildings of 2-4 stories in the area. Neponset is bordered by Port Norfolk to the east, Popes Hill to the north east, Peabody Square to the North west, and Adams Village to the west. Transportation in the Neponset area is served by stations of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Red Line services stations. Various bus routes also run through the area as well as Interstate 93 which is also Route 3 and U.S. 1 which serves as the connection between Dorchester and Quincy as well as Downtown Boston. |
