History



Historically, Mattapan was a section of neighborhood that borders Dorchester and was annexed in 1870. Developed primarily residentially, Mattapan was the original name given to Dorchester by the Native Americans meaning “a good place to be” or “a good place to sit.”

Mattapan developed as a residential and commercial area with railroads and streetcars making their way downtown which increased the accessibility to Boston. During the late 19th and early 20th century, Mattapan was a predominantly residential neighborhood of Boston that included public housing as well as single family homes and apartment buildings.

Description



Mattapan is a neighborhood in Boston that is home to law offices, banks, restaurants, and various retail shops. The heart of the neighborhood is located along Blue Hill Avenue and Mattapan Square right where the Blue Hill Avenue and River Street intersections meet. This is the primary point for most commercial business in Mattapan as the majority of the rest of the Boston neighborhood is residential housing.

Residents



Today, Mattapan is home to more than 28,000 people. In the past, residents of the area have been mostly a diverse mix of Irish, Jewish and Haitian immigrants who have chosen Mattapan as a home but today the area is primarily made up of a large population of African Americans and immigrants from the Caribbean.
