History of Jamaica Plain



Jamaica Plain is an area of Boston that was founded by the Puritans when they were seeking farm land to the south. The area was originally part of the city of Roxbury. Over the years, growth in Jamaica Plain increased and the triple decker house began showing up in the 1870s through the 1890s. The first commercial blocks in the area were build in the early 1870s and by the mid 1870s commercial buildings were being built in the area.

The 19th century brought many changes to Jamaica Plain including changes to the streetcar route which took place in the 1977 when the Arborway line which had been in service since 1903 was stopped at Health Street. Many other changes have been seen through the years as Jamaica Plain has developed into a large community backed by professionals, political activists and artists.

Jamaica Plain is a neighborhood in Boston that spans a total of 4.4 square miles and is home to more than 40,000 residents. The area was one of the first streetcar suburbs in America and was also home to much of Boston's Emerald Necklace or parks that were designed by the late Frederick Law Olmsted.

Today, Jamaica Plain is home to many smaller subdistricts such as Brookside, Jamaica Hills, Jackson Square and Sumner Hill. The area features various parks and greenery which is likely why it Jamaica Plain was referred to in the 19th century as the Eden of America. Jamaica Plain continues to be one of the greenest neighborhoods in Boston still today boasting parks along the Emerald Necklace.

Jamaica Plain is a primarily spanish speaking area with much of the population coming from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. With only about 50% of the Jamaica Plain population being of non hispanic White descent, the are is comprised of a mixture of Hispanic and Latinos, Asians and African Americans.

Parks in the area include the Olmsted Park featuring Leverett Pond, Willow Pond and Ward's Pond, Jamaica Pond which boasts 60 acres of the deepest fresh water in Boston, Franklin Park with holds the Franklin Park Zoo and is the largest zoo in New England and also Arnold Arboretum which is a 265 acre plant collection that is maintained by Harvard University.
