Fort Hill Boston is located new what is now known as the intersection of Oliver and High Streets. During the early years, and until at least the year 1675, Fort Hill actually ran out into the Atlantic Ocean which is why the area here is now called Fort Point (due to the point of Fort Hill heading out the the ocean). This area was once used as a defensive point to place cannons because it was at such as high point and had such as close proximity to the sea which offered advantages during war or battle.
Fort Hill is now part of Fort Point which is a neighborhood that is bounded by by the South Boston Waterfront area and the Fort Point artists' community as well as the Fort Point Channel. Today Fort Point is a much flatter area of land that the Fort Hill once was. The Boston Redevelopment Authority defines the Fort Point District as being located within the South Boston area and consisting of approximately 100 square acres of land that consist of Fort Point Channel on the west, the Summer Street to the northern boundary, Bypass Road to the east and to the south West 2nd Street. |
